Eight Legged Freaks~heavier on the comedy than drama

You’re very right: It is tricky to find films with the right balance. The majority of monster movies are heavy on the drama. Or, as in “Evolution”, the comedy is slapstick, with very few serious moments. By the way: I am a major fan of “The Host”, which I first saw aired twice one evening on G4 channel. I now have my own copy, courtesy of a Y!A friend.
There are some old-style monster movies that combine what you are seeking:
Orca
The White Buffalo
King Kong (1933)
The Valley of Gwangi
20 Million Miles to Earth
It Came from Beneath the Sea
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
Dagon
Gojira
Godzilla – any of them – I love them
Twilight
Blade – 1-2-3
Cloverfield
The Fog
Shiri
Jaws – maybe?
Enjoy them, I do.
